The Titles Explained
Pastor and Assistant Pastor The Pastor title is also a general title, but is more specific of leading a church or congregation. A Pastor can also be a Reverend or Minister and usually is before becoming a Pastor. Understand that this does not mean you must have a formal church building before using the title. It can mean that you are holding services in your home (if zoning regulations in your town or city permit it, and in most places that I know of because of the separation of church and state the guidelines and zoning are pretty lenient on this issue but you ought to verify them before you start holding the services simply by calling your local building inspector or zoning official), or it may mean that you plan on having a church in the future. If you are comfortable with the Pastor title then you should certainly use it. The Pastor being the spiritual leader of the flock then leads us to the title of Assisant Pastor which is is for someone under the authority of another Pastor or Minister. Evangelist The Evangelist title is a bit more specific, and implies more that you feel more of a need to be on the move, maybe from church to church, or ministry to ministry, wherever your Christian talents are welcome. You may also feel a need to participate in revival services and such as the Spirit directs you. Chaplain The Chaplain generally works in some type of institutional environment. You might feel comfortable with veterans organizations, hospitals, nursing or convalescent homes (even though the Reverend, Minister and Pastor titles are also fine there), other options include penal facilities, rescue missions and such. Apostle The title of Apostle generally is chosen by an individual that wishes a more direct connection to the original Apostles in the Bible. This title inspires confidence and generally are used by one who is in some type of authority in the church or ministry, so you may not want to start out here. But, as with the Evangelist, the Apostle may also like moving around more from church to church or ministry to ministry, and possibly might like to work on the international level. Missionary The Missionary is also one who likes to move around but not necessarily just around town, he or she might desire to travel both inside and outside the country, and to areas of the world that may not have heard much about the saving Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This individual might also be found in depressed areas of the city and countryside in his or her own country where poverty, and hopelessness need to be touched by the hand of God. Elder or Deacon More of a back room type of title, a person who chooses the Elder or Deacon title feels more comfortable working under another minister. However, they may be fully ordained also in order to carry out the full range of ministerial duties such as baptisms, funerals, weddings etc. Preacher, Parson and Circuit Preacher The title of Preacher is from days gone by 1800's and early to mid 1900's. If used today this title is more likely to be used in the country, hills or mountains in smaller, more rural, communities. The title of Parson is similar to Preacher, and the title Circuit Preacher is a person, like the evangelist, who likes being on the move. Bishop The Bishop title is somewhat misunderstood. Although noy usually the first choice of a newly ordained minister the person who picks this title, when being ordained, feels that they will be bringing other people into their church or ministry and wish this title in order to show their leadership position. Youth Minister The title youth minister speaks for itself. This is a person who spreads the Gospel to the youth and interacts with the youth of the congregation. If you like dealing with youth, teenagers, and young adults and this is your main endeavor then this is a good title for you.
Music Minister The following titles are more for the Catholic faith, or similar orders, and we do not recommend them for the individuals that choose to be ordained as independent Christian clergy.
